As an effort to improve the quality of student writing of scientific articles, the Scientific Publication Gallery of the Faculty of Economics, Ganesha Education University held a Literacy webinar series 2 on Wednesday 23 December 2020. The webinar with the theme “Avoid Plagiarism with Literacy” was opened by Mr. Dr. I Putu Gede Diatmika, S.E., Ak, M.Si as Deputy Dean II of the Faculty of Economics, Ganesha Education University by presenting two competent speakers in the field of writing scientific articles, namely Mr. I Gede Agus Pertama Yudantara, S.E., M.SA as Editor in Chief of the Vocational Journal and Mr. Dr. A A. Ngurah Yudha Martin Mahardika, S.Pd., M.Pd as Editor in Chief of the Hotel and Tourism Management Journal.
In his presentation, Mr. I Gede Agus Pertama Yudantara, S.E., M.SA explained the legal basis for scientific publications, including the importance of the value of honesty that a person must have in writing so that the resulting article does not indicate an act of plagiarism. This is very important because currently there are still writers who try to commit various frauds to pass the similarity test. In the next session, Mr. Dr. A A. Ngurah Yudha Martin Mahardika, S.Pd., M.Pd emphasized the importance of a writer’s ability to paraphrase a sentence so that there are no indications of plagiarism. Currently, the activity indicated as plagiarism in writing scientific articles is when the author quotes a statement, therefore a writer is obliged to paraphrase again so that the entire sentence contained in the article can pass the similarity test so that it is safe when published. Apart from paraphrasing, another way to prevent plagiarism is to synthesize or give a new meaning to a quoted statement.
Overall, the Literacy webinar series 2, which was attended by almost 500 participants from various universities in Indonesia, went smoothly and was very attractive thanks to guidance from Mr. Rahutama Atidira, S.T., M.M. as Moderator. At the end of the event, the resource person gave prizes to four participants who successfully answered the quiz regarding paraphrasing and synthesis of a sentence, thereby increasing the enthusiasm of the participants as well as the excitement of the webinar.
